General Care of Tillandsias

Tillandsias (air plants) will grow best when provided with bright light, good ventilation, and 40%-70% humidity. Many species will acquire bright red coloration when grown in strong light. Although the plants can grow in lower light levels, the growth rate will be slower and the plants will need less water. Only distilled water or rain water should be used to soak or mist them as minerals found in tap water will clog the leaves. This may take several months to occur depending on how much dissolved solids are in your tap water, but once it happens it is irreversible and fatal.
The amount of water these plants need will depend on the environment they are growing in. Under average terrarium conditions with good (70%) humidity, weekly spraying may be sufficient. For terrariums with lower humidity, spray more frequently. A good indicator of moisture adequacy are the leaves themselves. Plump, flattened leaves indicate that the plants are receiving sufficient water. If the leaves appear shriveled or the edges are rolling in the plant needs more water. Sometimes, severely dehydrated plants can be resurrected by a good soaking in the sink or a bucket overnight. Although many species need water on a frequent basis, all Tillandsias need excellent ventilation and must dry out completely between watering to prevent rot.
The steps below should be followed when receiving plants by mail.
STEP 1. Carefully remove the plants from their wrapping. If you have ordered more than one of a single variety, only one of each will be labeled.
STEP 2. Examine the plants. It is normal for some of the leaves to be cracked and/or have brown tips. Simply trim off any damaged parts.
STEP 3. Due to the rigors of shipping, they will be slightly dehydrated when you receive them. Soak them in lukewarm water for several hours to rehydrate them. It is amazing how much better they will look after a good drink!
