| Introduction to Carnivorous Plant Bog Gardening The long hot days of summer have brought out the best in our carnivorous plants as they soak up plentiful sun. We are now offering more species and varieties of these fascinating plants than ever before. Act now while the selection is best! Carnivorous plants are denizens of nutrient poor habitats hence the evolution of their carnivorous abilities to compensate for the lack of sustenance in their environment. Many are found in the acidic peat bogs and swamps of North America including Sarracenia, Venus Fly Traps, Utricularia and several species of Sundews (Drosera). True sun worshippers, these plants love basking in full sun and at least require strong fluorescent lighting to flourish. Others, such as the Nepenthes, grow in the tropics under a wide variety of conditions and tend to prefer lower light levels and also require a more stable and higher humidity level to thrive. Both are easy to grow as long as their individual needs are met. One of the easiest and most rewarding ways to grow the North American natives is to create a Bog Garden Bowl. Click here to find out how. When growing them in the tropical terrarium it is usually best to leave them in their pot, as they require the acid conditions that the peat moss substrate provides and it also makes removing the temperate species for winter dormancy much easier. Alternately, they can be grown in a bog terrarium where they can be planted directly into the peat substrate. For instructions on how to set up one of these fascinating terrariums click here.
